# THE SHARED WALL
## Episode 6: “THE PARENT TRAPDOOR”
### INT. NISHA’S APARTMENT - MORNING
A CAT yowls from inside a laundry basket. A houseplant droops dramatically beside it. From the adjoining wall:
**PARROT (O.S.)**
Nisha has no plan! Nisha has no plan!
NISHA RAO, dressed for a job interview, grabs her keys and freezes.
**NISHA**
I have a plan. I’m going to leave for twelve minutes and trust adults.
The wall THUMPS. TESSA VALE bursts through Nisha’s door, holding a travel carrier.
**TESSA**
I need someone to watch Pickles.
The cat hisses.
**NISHA**
That is not a cat. That is a hostage negotiator.
Marcus Bell enters behind Tessa, carrying a wilted plant like an injured soldier.
**MARCUS**
And my fern has entered hospice.
**TESSA**
Owen’s parrot learned my name and is using it to blackmail me.
The parrot shrieks from next door.
**PARROT (O.S.)**
Tessa hides snacks!
Everyone looks at Tessa.
**TESSA**
That is a private medical matter.
### INT. HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER
The neighbors stand around a whiteboard labeled: EMERGENCY CARE ROTATION.
Owen Pike appears from his apartment wearing noise-canceling headphones. The parrot sits on his shoulder.
**OWEN**
I’ll take the cat.
Pickles immediately climbs onto Owen’s head.
**OWEN (CONT'D)**
Correction. The cat has taken me.
Nisha points to the board.
**NISHA**
Marcus waters the fern. Tessa watches the parrot. Owen watches Pickles. I go to my interview.
**MARCUS**
What does the parrot need?
**OWEN**
Conversation, stimulation, and absolutely no exposure to secrets.
The parrot tilts its head.
**PARROT**
Marcus cries in shower!
Marcus slowly lowers the watering can.
**MARCUS**
It was one time.
**TESSA**
It was Tuesday.
Everyone stares at her.
**TESSA (TO CAMERA)**
The wall doesn’t just have ears. It has witnesses.
### INT. THREE APARTMENTS - INTERCUT - LATER
A frantic caretaking montage.
Tessa sits stiffly with the parrot.
**TESSA**
Repeat after me: “Tessa is competent.”
**PARROT**
Tessa is panicking.
In Marcus’s apartment, he pours water onto the fern. Nothing happens.
**MARCUS**
Come on. You’re a plant. Your standards are underground.
In Nisha’s apartment, Owen attempts to read Pickles a children’s book. The cat sits on the pages.
**OWEN**
Fine. We’ll improvise.
Pickles leaps onto the bookshelf. Owen follows, knocking over a bowl.
Through the wall, the parrot hears the crash.
**PARROT**
Emergency! Emergency! Owen is losing to furniture!
Nisha rushes back in, interview forgotten.
**NISHA**
I’m sorry. Did everyone survive?
The fern suddenly perks up. Marcus has been watering a plastic plant. The real fern sits untouched beside it.
**MARCUS**
In my defense, this one looked thirstier.
A beat. The parrot flaps onto Nisha’s shoulder. Pickles curls around her ankles.
The plant droops again.
**TESSA**
We need a system.
**OWEN**
We have a system.
He points to the whiteboard. Under the rotation schedule, he has written:
EVERYONE WATCH EVERYTHING.
The parrot nods.
**PARROT**
Good system.
They all look at one another—then begin moving together: Tessa waters the fern, Marcus holds Pickles, Nisha rehearses her interview, Owen translates the parrot’s demands.
**NISHA**
Why do I feel more prepared now?
**MARCUS**
Because your household has four adults.
**TESSA**
And one judgmental bird.
**PARROT**
Five adults.
The cat yowls. The fern stands upright.
**CUT TO BLACK.**
**PARROT (O.S.)**
Tessa hides snacks!
**TESSA (O.S.)**
Stop saying that!
